  1. What is the best way to learn about Natural-Fit handrim options?

The best way to learn more about the different options for the Natural-Fit is to visit our Handrim Feature Finder.

  2. What information do I need to provide when ordering the Natural-Fit?

In order to get the correct Natural-Fit components and mounting hardware (to attach it to the wheel) you will always need to know the following to place your order:

    1. Natural-Fit or Natural-Fit LT (See below for more info)
    2. Standard Grip or Super Grip (See below for more info)
    3. Wheel Size (20", 22", 24", 25", 26")
    4. Wheel Type (standard spoke, mag, Spinergy, X-Core, etc.)
    5. Attachment Type:
      • 6-Point Tab - Tabs on the handrim (See below for more info)
      • 6-Point Rivet Nut - Screw mount into rivets on the handrim (See below for info)
      • 7 and 8-Point Rivet Nut - Invacare or Skyway Mag (for 24" wheels only)

    Notes:
    * The Natural-Fit does not fit wheels with 4 or 9-point connections.
    * For flat free or solid insert tires on wheels with Tab attachments, the Natural-Fit must be installed prior to the flat free tires.
    * You cannot install on Quickie Mag Wheels ordered without a handrim ("handrim delete") because they will not have the necessary standoffs on the wheel. Always order mag wheels with the rim, then remove it to install the Natural-Fit.
    * There is a $45.00 Restock Fee on all returns that are as a result of ordering errors.

  3. What is the difference between the Natural-Fit and the Natural-Fit LT?

Natural-Fit and the Natural-Fit LT both have two components: The contoured thumb piece and the oval. The size and weight of the oval is the difference between the Natural-Fit and the Natural-Fit LT. The Natural-Fit uses the original, larger profile oval. It offers 80% more surface area for gripping than a standard handrim yet weighs just 24 ounces. The Natural-Fit LT uses a reduced weight, smaller profile oval. The LT is designed for those looking for a reduction in weight or a smaller gripping surface (for those with smaller hands). The LT is 17% lighter than the original Natural-Fit - it weighs just 20 ounces (only 5 ounces more than a standard round-tube handrim).

  4. What is the difference between the Standard Grip and the Super Grip?

For the contoured thumb area of the Natural-Fit, we offer two coating options: A Standard Grip coating and a Super Grip coating. The Standard Grip coating is a thin, light-weight powder coating on the thumb area intended to serve as a propulsion surface that is slightly higher friction than the smooth surface of a standard anodized aluminum handrim. The Super Grip is a higher friction coating for the thumb area that is an advanced copolymer which is similar to a PVC coating.

  5. Should I get the Standard Grip or the Super Grip?

The answer to this question depends on your personal preference regarding how much friction or how grippy you want the propulsion surface (the thumb area) to be on the Natural-Fit. The standard grip is a powder coat that provides a lower friction surface on the thumb area to go along with the smooth braking surface on the anodized oval component. For those users particularly interested in the ergonomic features of the Natural-Fit but who do not like high friction surfaces, then the standard grip will be your best choice. In contrast, because the SuperGrip thumb area is coated with a higher friction copolymer (similar to a vinyl coating, but with better adherence to the aluminum), it will be the best choice for users who want both the ergonomic benefits of the Natural-Fit along with a grippier propulsion surface. The grippier surface of the SuperGrip may be particularly helpful when going up ramps, hills, or when traversing difficult surfaces (e.g., like deep-pile carpeting). Keep in mind that these coating options are for the thumb area only. The oval component of the Natural-Fit is always hard anodized in black to provide a smooth braking surface.

To learn more about our different coating options (on both the oval and thumb piece areas) please visit our Handrim Feature Finder.

  6. What is the difference between a Tab and Rivet Nut attachment?

The Natural-Fit attaches to the wheel through either a Tab or Rivet Nut (depending on the type of wheel). For the Tab attachment, connecting screws go perpendicular to the wheelchair axle into the wheel rim and through flat tabs on the handrim. Most spoke wheels (except standard Quickie wheels) and Spinergy use a tab attachment. With a Rivet Nut attachment, screws go parallel to the wheelchair axle into plastic round spacer sleeves and into a rivet nut set in the handrim (no tabs on the handrim). Rivet nut is used on Mag, X-Core, and standard Quickie wheels.

Quickie Wheels Clarification: **You cannot install on Quickie Mag Wheels ordered without a handrim ("handrim delete") - they will not have the necessary standoffs on the wheel. Always order mag wheels with the rim, then remove it to install the Natural-Fit. Here is a specific breakdown of Quickie wheels and the attachment methods that they use. Most standard Quickie 22" and 24" wheels use a rivet nut mount (Quickie refers to it as a "screw mount"). 26" wheels use a tab mount or a rivet nut mount. All Quickie Performance (QP) wheels (heat treated wheels and basketball and tennis wheels) use a tab mount, with one exception: 24" tennis wheels use a rivet nut mount. For all Quickie wheel models, please always verfiy the mounting type with Sunrise and always be sure to verify that there are 6 connecting points and not four. The Natural-Fit does not fit wheels with 4-point connections.

  7. Do the tires have to be removed from the wheel to install the Natural-Fit?

The Natural-Fit will install on wheels with all different types of tires - both pneumatic and solid tires. However, we have had multiple reports from Natural-Fit users of noise associated with SHOX Solid Tires. When the SHOX tires were switched out, the noise stopped. If you have SHOX Tires and you are experiencing noise, consider switching to a different solid tire such as Kik Tires (www.amerityre.com). Whether or not you need to remove the tire to install the Natural-Fit depends on the type of wheel. For wheels that use a Rivet Nut attachment, you do NOT need to remove the tires to install the Natural-Fit. For wheels that use a Tab attachment, the tires need to be removed to install the Natural-Fit. For "flat free" or solid insert tires on wheels with Tab attachments, the Natural-Fit must be installed before putting on the solid insert tires.

  8. Are the Natural-Fit and the LT designed for people with limited hand function?

No. The Natural-Fit Handrim is designed for a person with good hand function because its design incorporates a grip that uses the thumb. The ergonomic grip can be fully taken advantage of only when one's fingers are able to wrap around the gripping surface. Also, recall that the Natural-Fit is not a fully coated handrim - only the thumb piece is coated whereas the oval is a smooth surface for braking the wheelchar. To learn about our handrim options for different levels of hand function please visit our Handrim Feature Finder.

  9. Are the Natural-Fit and the LT all one piece or do they have component parts?

The Natural-Fit and the LT both come in two pieces: The contoured thumb area and the oval rim. This is what allows us to apply a friction coating on the propulsion surface (the thumb area) and a smooth coating on the braking surface (the oval). If you are interested in learning more about how these components may be used separately, please visit our Handrim Feature Finder.

  10. My Natural-Fits do not seem to be installed correctly and make noise. What can I do about it?

If the compression fit between the handrim assembly and the wheel rim is not fully tightened down, then it allows for slight movement of the components which can create creaking or squeaking noises. To fix this, re-install the Natural-Fits - that is, loosen the screws and start the installation process over again (please visit our Natural-Fit Installation page). In this case, please take extra care to insure that the Natural-Fit assembly is securely tightened down to the wheelrim. Also, if you have pneumatic tires, be sure that they are fully inflated. As tires become deflated, they buldge out and may create friction with the thumb piece of the Natural-Fit that may result in a squeaking noise.

  11. Is there research on the benefits of the Natural-Fit Handrim?

Yes, there is!! And, in fact there is quite a bit of it. If you are interested in learning more about the research that provides sound evidence of the benefits of using the Natural-Fit Handrim, please go to the Research Evidence of Benefits page. Some of this research is also described in an an article ("A Closer Look") in PN (Paraplegia News), November, 2004.

  12. Can the Natural-Fit Handrim help me with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or pain in my wrists and hands?

Yes, and we have had Natural-Fit users consistently confirm this both in testimonials that they send us (Natural-Fit Testimonials) and in scientific surveys of over Natural-Fit users (Research Evidence of Benefits). We have also compiled a set of tables and references that form the basis for the Letter of Medical Necessity for using the Natural-Fit Handrim in the treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Natural-Fit Tables and References for CTS. We encourage you to evaluate the evidence for yourself and to consult with a clinician.

  13. Will the Natural-Fit and the LT mount to any size wheel?

The Natural-Fit is available for 22", 24", 25" and 26" wheels (including spoked wheels, Spinergy Wheels, X-Core, and mag) with either a

    • 6-point tab mount (e.g., connecting screws go perpendicular to the axle into the wheel rim and through flat tabs on the handrim)
    • 6-point rivet nut mount (connecting screws go parallel to the axle through plastic round spacer sleeves)
    • 6, 7 or 8-point mag wheel mount.
    • For the 7-point mount (Invacare Mag) and 8-point mount (Skyway Mag), the Natural-Fit and LT are only available for 24' wheels.

    Note:
    * The Natural-Fit does not fit wheels with 4 or 9-point connections.

  14. Does the Natural-Fit or LT add to the width of my chair?

The Natural-Fit and the LT will not add any width to your chair if you have a tab mount and you typically mount your handrim with the tab in the outside position (this means that the screw connecting the handrim to the wheel goes through the hole at the end of the tab). If you typically have your tab set in the inside position (the screw goes through the inside hole), then you will have to move it to the outside position in order to install the Natural-Fit. This will add 3/8 of an inch to the width of each wheel.

If you have a rivet-nut mount (a Quickie or X-Core Wheel), the Natural-Fit will add 1/8 of an inch to the width of each wheel.

  15. Are the Natural-Fit and the LT made of lightweight materials?

Yes. Both the Natural-Fit and the LT are made of lightweight aluminum (6061 aluminum alloy). The original Natural-Fit weighs just 24 ounces and the Natural-Fit LT weighs 20 ounces. More importantly, Research Evidence demonstrates that the Natural-Fit provides better performance and more efficient propulsion than standard handrims. Put simply, the better performance and efficiency far outweigh the small difference in weight. More efficient propulsion, or covering the same distance with less effort, helps to reduce the stress and strain on the arms as an individual propels his or her chair.

  16. Does the Natural-Fit come with a new wheel?

No, the Natural-Fit only replaces the handrim on your present wheels. It does not replace the wheel itself.

  17. Will I be able to install the Natural-Fit handrims on my wheels myself?

Yes, you will be able to do it. With a rivet nut mount, the process is straightforward and will take about 15-20 minutes for both wheels. With a tab mount, because you have to remove the tire and may need to adjust the tabs (especially on Spinergy wheels), the process takes more effort. If you have experience with removing your wheelchair tires, and you carefully follow the installation instructions, then you will be able to complete the installation process. If you have never removed your tires or you are not mechanically inclined, you may want to ask for assistance from your local dealer. To get more detail on the installation process, please visit our Natural-Fit Installation page.

  18. Is there a patent on the Natural-Fit Handrim?

Yes. There are, in fact, two issued patents on the Natural-Fit Handrim - one issued based on its original design (#6,276,705) and one issued (#7,497,456) based on significant design improvements made at the time that we brought the Natural-Fit to market.
